Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home
Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is an orphanage for elephants located within the Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka. The transit home was established in 1995 with the aim of providing a safe haven for orphaned elephant calves and rehabilitating them for release back into the wild.
The transit home is run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and operates on a unique system, where the elephant calves are cared for in a semi-wild environment. The calves are fed on a milk formula and are kept in enclosures that are open to the park’s natural environment. This allows the calves to interact with the wild elephants and develop the necessary social and survival skills for life in the wild.
Visitors to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home can observe the elephant calves being fed and cared for by the transit home staff. The transit home also offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the challenges facing Sri Lanka’s wild elephant population and the conservation efforts being made to protect them.
The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is a popular attraction in Sri Lanka and is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wildlife conservation and the protection of elephants. By visiting the transit home, you are also contributing to the conservation efforts and helping to ensure the survival of Sri Lanka’s wild elephant population.
